One
of the most common phrases heard from kids in school
today is: "I hate Math!" As an 8th grade
Algebra teacher, those words make me cringe. I wanted
to know the real reason why so many kids thought that
way. They'll often say they don't get it, or it's
just too boring. But I believe it goes deeper than
that.
Then
one day, I heard a Judo instructor speaking at my
school's community meeting. He was talking about his
after school program and one of the kids asked him
how long it takes to become a black belt. He replied
that it depends on the person. Every student has their
own pace. That's when it hit me. Maybe kids hate math
because they're forced to follow the pace of the teacher
instead of their own pace. Judo Math was born!
